Dual-frequency driven acoustic cavitation – running
Irradiating a liquid domain with high intensity and frequency ultrasound, bubbles are formed which are nearly spherical. During the radial pulsation of such bubbles, extreme conditions can be generated (due to the very rapid contraction phase called bubble collapse), such as very high temperature and pressure or even shock waves. Many ultrasonic technological application exploit these extreme conditions: destruction of kidney stones (litotropsy), remove of cancer or other tissues (histotripsy), cleaning and treatment of material surfaces or increase the efficiency of chemical reactions. Recent experimental researches showed that the application of two frequency can significantly improve the efficiency of the aforementioned applications. The problem, however, involves large number of parameters; therefore, there is still no clear agreement on the optimal operation strategies in the literature. By exploiting the very high computational power of professional graphics processing units (GPGPUs), the main aim of the project is to perform high resolution parameter scans and resolve the discrepancies presented in the literature.
